In the second leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout play-off, Atlético Madrid defeated Club Brugge 4–1, advancing to the Round of 16 with a 7–4 aggregate score. Before the match, Atlético president Enrique Cerezo had lunch with Club Brugge’s management. Prior to that, he spoke to the media.
On the kick-off time
“We’ve always had issues with the kick-off time. If it’s at four, they say four doesn’t work; if it’s at seven, they say it’s too early. So what time should it be? At midnight? The current time is actually quite good. Of course, many people are still at work, but I think this time is suitable for fans to watch the game. The same applies to both La Liga and the Champions League.”
Is qualification a must?
“It’s a necessity, not an obligation. I believe it will be a very tough match. We already experienced that a few days ago at their stadium. Since we managed to score three goals away from home, we can certainly score at our own ground as well.”
Is it an economic necessity?
“It’s a necessity in every aspect. First for the fans, then on a sporting level, third economically, fourth because we want to remain among the last 16 in the Champions League, and fifth for any other reason you can think of.”
Do these two matches define the season?
“If we don’t fight for these two games, the outcome won’t be very different. But I’d like to point out that there are still quite a few days before we face Barcelona. Our current situation is good, but it will still be a very difficult match. If we miss these two opportunities that could make the season exciting, the consequences would be serious.”
On the rumours Griezmann with Orlando City
“I was very surprised when the news came out this morning. Griezmann is an Atlético player, deeply loved by the fans, and vital to the team — as you can see from his recent performances. I know nothing about it. The most important thing today is the match.”
Will Sørloth start?
“If I were the coach, I wouldn’t know how to line up the team either. From a fan’s perspective, I’d want everyone to start. But then who would sit on the bench? I don’t know… perhaps Oblak.”
On Prestiani’s suspension
“This isn’t just an issue for one club, but a widespread problem, because this sanction will trigger a series of serious consequences. I won’t comment on whether it is fair or not, but it will certainly cause a lot of trouble.”
